Mrityu Bhaga is a sensitive degree assigned to each planet in each zodiac sign. When a planet occupies this degree, its natural significations may become vulnerable or difficult to express properly. However, Mrityu Bhaga alone does not guarantee a negative event. Its results depend on planetary strength, dispositor, house placement, aspects, conjunctions and dasha. A strong supporting planet can significantly reduce the difficulty.

What Is Mrityu Bhaga?
In Vedic astrology, every planet has certain degrees in the zodiac that are traditionally considered its Mrityu Bhaga, meaning a highly sensitive or critical degree.
The degree changes according to the planet and the sign it occupies. For example, according to the commonly cited Sarvartha Chintamani/Jataka Parijatam table, the Sun's Mrityu Bhaga is 6° Cancer, while its degree in Aries is 20°.
Therefore, Mrityu Bhaga cannot be judged by using one fixed degree for a planet.
The concept is important because a planet at or very close to its Mrityu Bhaga degree may have difficulty expressing its significations normally.
Does Mrityu Bhaga Always Give Bad Results?
No.
This is one of the most important points when studying Mrityu Bhaga.
A planet in Mrityu Bhaga should not automatically be declared weak, destructive, or capable of causing death.
The astrologer must examine:
✦Planetary dignity
✦House placement
✦House lordship

A planet in Mrityu Bhaga with strong support can behave very differently from one that is simultaneously debilitated, afflicted and placed in a difficult house.
Importance of the Dispositor
The dispositor is one of the most important factors.
Suppose Venus is in Mrityu Bhaga. Do not stop the analysis there.
Check:
Where is Venus's dispositor?
If the dispositor is:
Exalted
In its own sign
Strongly placed
Supported by benefics
In a favourable house
the negative potential can be reduced.
If the dispositor is debilitated, heavily afflicted, or connected with the 6th, 8th or 12th houses, the problem can become considerably stronger.
Thus:
Mrityu Bhaga shows vulnerability; the condition of the rest of the horoscope determines how that vulnerability manifests.

Venus
Can affect:
✦Relationships

The condition of Venus's dispositor and supporting planets becomes especially important.
Saturn
Can affect:
✦Discipline
✦Work
✦Responsibility
✦Timing
✦Endurance
An afflicted Saturn can disturb the balance between work, responsibility and enjoyment.
Rahu and Ketu
The nodes require additional judgement through their:
✦Dispositor
✦Nakshatra lord
✦House
✦Conjunctions
✦Aspects
✦Dasha
They should not be interpreted from Mrityu Bhaga alone.
Mrityu Bhaga + 6th, 8th and 12th Houses
The condition becomes more serious when the Mrityu Bhaga planet is connected with the 6th, 8th or 12th houses.
These houses can introduce themes involving:
Obstacles and conflicts
Disease and competition
Sudden changes and crises
Isolation and separation
Loss and expenditure
For example, a Mrityu Bhaga planet that is also debilitated and strongly connected with the 6th, 8th or 12th deserves considerably more attention than a well-supported Mrityu Bhaga planet.
Mrityu Bhaga and Dasha
Mrityu Bhaga can become particularly relevant when the affected planet operates through:
Mahadasha
Antardasha
Pratyantar dasha
Important transits
This is where the natal vulnerability may become more visible.
But again:
Mrityu Bhaga does not mean that the entire dasha will automatically be bad.
The planet's complete condition must be judged.
Example: Mimi Fariña
Mimi Fariña, the American singer-songwriter and sister of Joan Baez, was diagnosed with lung cancer in December 1998.
Her chart provides an example of how Mrityu Bhaga can be examined alongside conventional Parashari health indicators.
In this chart, the 7th and 8th houses fall in Mrityu Bhaga. For respiratory health, the 3rd house and Gemini are important indicators of the lungs in Parashari Jyotish.
Looking at the chart more closely:
✦The 3rd lord Saturn is placed in the 7th house, in Gemini, and is conjunct Rahu.
✦Rahu is placed in the 7th house and aspects the 3rd house.
✦The 7th lord Mercury, acting as the dispositor of Saturn, is placed in the 4th house in Pisces, where Mercury is debilitated.
✦Saturn is positioned on the Rahu–Ketu axis.
✦In the Bhava Chalit chart, Mars moves into the 3rd house, further influencing the house associated with the lungs.
✦Rahu Mahadasha began in 1994, preceding the diagnosis in 1998.
This creates a chain connecting the 3rd house, 3rd lord, Gemini, Rahu and the 7th/8th-house Mrityu Bhaga positions.
The important point is not any single placement. Multiple factors converge on the same area: the 3rd house and its lord are afflicted, Gemini is involved, Rahu strongly connects with the 3rd house, and the relevant planetary period was operating.
From a Jyotisha perspective, this is therefore an example where Mrityu Bhaga becomes more significant because it is reinforced by multiple independent chart factors.

Mrityu Bhaga and the Ascendant
Mrityu Bhaga is not limited to planets.
Traditional tables also assign sensitive degrees to the Ascendant. Some traditions and texts differ in their calculations, so the astrologer should clearly state which system is being followed.
If the Ascendant falls at its sensitive degree, examine:
✦Ascendant lord
✦Strength of the Ascendant
✦Planets influencing the Ascendant
✦Condition of the relevant house
✦Overall chart strength
The same principle applies to houses when a tradition assigns them sensitive degrees.
Remedies
Traditional astrologers use several approaches for a severely afflicted planetary condition.
One approach is Prana Pratishtha, intended within the traditional framework to strengthen or restore the planetary principle.
Other practical approaches involve consciously strengthening the constructive qualities represented by the planet.
For example:
✦Sun: maintain a healthy relationship with father and authority.
✦Moon: develop emotional stability and healthy routines.
✦Mars: channel aggression into disciplined physical activity.
✦Mercury: improve communication and information awareness.
✦Jupiter: seek proper teachers and improve judgement.
✦Venus: maintain healthy relationship boundaries.
✦Saturn: develop disciplined work and rest patterns.
These are traditional/spiritual practices, not substitutes for medical treatment.
Should You Wear the Planet's Gemstone?
There is no universal rule that a gemstone must never be worn because a planet is in Mrityu Bhaga.
Gemstone selection depends on the planet's functional lordship, strength, house placement and overall role in the horoscope.
Strengthening a planet without considering these factors can be inappropriate.
Therefore, gemstone decisions should be based on the complete horoscope.
Mrityu Bhaga Degrees
The commonly cited Sarvartha Chintamani/Jataka Parijatam table gives different Mrityu Bhaga degrees for each planet in each sign.
PlanetAries Taurus Gemini Cancer Leo Virgo Libra Scorpio Sagittarius Capricorn Aquarius Pisces
Note: Different classical sources provide different values for some planets, particularly the Moon. Therefore, the source of the degree table should always be specified.
Final Rule
Mrityu Bhaga is best understood as a sensitive planetary position, not an automatic death indication.
The correct approach is:
Find the degree → judge planetary strength → examine dispositor → check house and lordship → examine afflictions and benefic support → check 6th/8th/12th connections → examine dasha → then predict.
A planet in Mrityu Bhaga may require more careful interpretation, but the final result comes from the entire horoscope, not from one degree alone.
